August in Review
Murders take place as fall approaches
Hellooooo everyone! I know, I know. This issue is coming late in the month, but it’s because I packed up and moved across the country at the end of August!! You are officially reading the words of a graduate MFA student (yaayyy) and yet another LA county resident (booooo).
Anyway, I have been adjusting to all of that, so this issue is coming later than normal and is also going to be pretty short. I didn’t not want to send out an issue—I mean who else is going to tell you what people were watching in August?? But I can’t give you the full spiel. What I can give you are the charts that I absolutely continued to put together through my move because I love them :).
Today’s feeling: Woah 😵💫
We Only watch Murders in this Building
The only shows I’ve watched in the past few weeks are Glee (I started this rewatch in March. I don’t know how I’m still here, but we’re halfway through season 5. Pray for me.) and Netflix’s One Piece.
I cannot for the life of me believe I’m saying this, but it might have (MIGHT have) convinced me to watch the anime. At most a few arcs. I’m not committing to the full 1000 episodes. I won’t let Oda win. But the live-action show was super fun, and I had a blast. If you’re into pirates and zany action, I’d highly recommend it.
Most watched TV streaming originals in August
Of the 19 shows that appear on this chart, I’ve seen 2 of them, so. That tells you how much I can speak to what’s on here. But I do continue to find what people are watching so interesting. I had never heard of The Wheel of Time before I saw it while researching new shows coming out, and now it’s on the chart. It’s really eye-opening to see how much stuff we miss when we’re not paying attention/specifically looking for it.
I wish I could show you guys the posters for these series to have a visual, but then I’d have to do each week individually and that’s a lot of charts to put together 😵💫. I’d do it, though. Possibly. Thoughts for the future.
Chris Pratt adopts two pet snakes
Have you guys ever seen Oldboy? By Park Chanwook? I saw it for the first time last month, and it’s one of the movies that I think everyone should watch so that they can talk about how they wish they’d never seen it. I mean this as a compliment.
I also watched Saturday Night Fever for the first time, and I think it’s a movie that no one should see. Ever. This is specifically not a compliment, it is a very pointed insult. You should listen to the soundtrack, though, because the Bee Gees are a gift.
Most watched streaming movies in August
Chris Pine fosters two baby frogs
Dungeons & Dragons refuses to leave this chart. I went back into the archives to see when it first joined the chart and that was the third week of May. It has now been on the chart (in total, but not consecutively) for 12 weeks. This has happened with a few other movies where they tally up weeks on the board despite falling off.
While I like looking out for Marathoners, I also think it’s impressive to be popular enough to continue to come back to the chart and stay for some time before falling off again. That’s just Chris Pine’s power, I keep telling y’all!
Watch Theater Camp on Hulu
I’m watching (avoiding) Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, and every week I wish the show would cease to exist! I simply do not want to experience negative emotions, and there is nothing to smile about while watching Jujutsu Kaisen season 2. This is also a compliment (mostly).
New streaming releases for September
I fear that my studies will overshadow my ability to do nothing but watch new shows and movies, but knowing myself, I will somehow find a way. Most of these titles have already come out, but I’m still very much looking forward to the final season of Sex Education on Netflix. Nothing brings me more comfort than trying to decipher the British education system hierarchy. I have a friend who lives in England and is in university right now, and when we try to explain our classes to each other and how they work, it just gets messier each time. At this point, I’m almost ready to give up, but nosiness will always outweigh confusion.
That’s all I’ve got for you this month! This should probably be the length of every issue, but it won’t be. You all subscribed because you like to listen to me speak, obviously (or rather, read my words? watch me write?). Who would I be if I didn’t repay you with as many words as I could put onto the page? You’re not just here for the charts, right? (If you’re here for anything, please let it be the charts.)
🎤 What are you enjoying this September?
Regardless, I’m happy you’re here at all. Thank you, as always, and let me know what media you’re swallowing whole (or have already swallowed whole) this month! See you in a few weeks 🎃.
